Joseph Willis and R. S. McKenzie formed a partnership prominently called as the McKenzie & Willis in 1906. It started as a real estate agency at the same time, it auctioned and sold second hand furniture. It quickly evolved to a business that focused exclusively on the furnishings trade. Today, we could think of a stylish furniture or a high quality interior when we hear the words, McKenzie & Willis combined with its service and expertise to make it much better!

An unfortunate circumstance happened in 1914 when the partnership was dissolved between Joseph Willis and R. S. McKenzie. Yet, the former decided to continue the business under its original name. On the earliest years of their business, they spent their time on the first floor of the Royal Exchange Building on the western side of Christchurch’s Cathedral Square. However, it expanded so quickly in 1928 and all the four floors of the reconstructed Queens Theatre in Hereford Street was filled by McKenzie & Willis. This time, furniture are not only presented, it also has blinds, curtains, flooring, and home appliances.

They realized in the early 1970s that McKenzie & Willis has the potential for growth into other areas. It started opening its first branch in the Southern Island in Timaru during 1973. From that time on, McKenzie & Willis opened its branches in Wanaka, Queenstown, and Dunedin, providing an enormous network of service and expertise throughout the South Island.

In 1980, McKenzie & Willis purchased another local Christchurch furnishing retailer, A. J. Whites following their building on the corner of Tuam and High Streets. Finally, the two businesses were integrated and it was substantially renovated! It then became known as the iconic McKenzie & Willis showroom.

Another sad event happened on February 22, 2011 when the Christchurch Earthquake damaged the building and the showroom as well. Yet, effort was quickly exerted in order to save the historic façade of the building. Today, the Christchurch flagship store is currently located at 181 Blenheim Road, sitting for more than four years.

And due to its positivity, it looks forward and acknowledges the ever changing energy of the home furnishing market as well as its customers. McKenzie & Willis aimed to continue its improvement and growth most especially with its “in home” services such as blind in home, curtain, and flooring consultations, measures and quotes, and interior design services.
