DIY: Body lotion

Making creams and body lotion is difficult? Not at all, it’s actually quite simple. Besides, you protect yourself from the chemicals that are in a lot of lotions you buy in shops by making it yourself. With the following recipe you can make a fragrant homemade body lotion that is healthy for your skin.

What you need:

  • 3 tea spoons (30-45 grams) of distilled water or aloe vera gel
  • ½ 125 milliliters of oil (grapeseed oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil or almond oil for sensitive skin)
  • 2 tea spoons of bee wax
  • Vitamin E oil
  • Essential oils

What to do

1

Melt the oil of your choice, the bee wax and the vitamin E oil in a skillet on low fire. Do this slowly, or you will burn the ingredients. .

2

When all the ingredients are nearly molten, get the skillet off the fire and put the contents in a big glass bowl. Make sure the mixture does not boil over, as that will keep it from solidifying. Soap up the skillet so it is easy to clean later on.

3

Add the distilled water or aloe vera gel to the mixture. If you want a thicker substance, you should add less water. Mix the ingredients with a blender until the mixture becomes thick. Leave the substance for 20 minutes. It needs time to get thicker and solidify. You don’t need to cover it with anything, you can just leave it on the kitchen counter.

Warning:

Before you use the lotion, you should test it on a small part of your body. You never know if you are allergic to it.

Tips

  • You can add rose petals, rose water, blueberries, raspberries, citrus fruits and different kinds of tea to give a nice colour and smell to your body lotion.
  • Never use more than 30% oil for your lotion, or it will become shiny and greasy looking. That’s not the way you want it to look, right?
  • Adding a little honey to the lotion is good for your skin and is favourable for its preservability.
  • The lotion is a great idea for a gift as well. Design a label and wrap it up nicely. This way you’ll have a really personal gift.
